He's one of the few that has a background as a chef and sommelier, as well as a great knack for pairing food with wine.
TONY "WINECHEF" LAWRENCE works globally as a food and wine pairing specialist/event planner with major wineries, distributors and fine wine shops.
Tony started to develop his skills at twelve years of age in retaurants and the vineyards of Maryland. His formal culinary training began in vocational school and refined during summers in Germany learning the food and wine of Europe. He has a BS degree in Hotel-Restaurant Management from Widener University in Pennsylvania and is a Pro-Chef CIA graduate of Greystone in Napa, CA.
Lawrence was the first African-American executive chef and sommelier at two highly regarded country clubs in Philadelphia, PA: Germantown Cricket Club and Merion Golf Club. He spent three years as executive chef and sommelier with the NFL Philadelphia Eagles, and six years on movie sets catering to the stars. He among 15 African-American cerified sommeliers in the country.
Tony likes to think "outside of the box" when it comes to wine and food. He is always busy educating the trade and consumers on the art and technique of food and wine pairing. Tony is a passionate professional who tastes about seven hundred wines and attends about two hundred and fifty pairings a month. This keeps him on top of his game and is why his cooking demos are fun and memorable to the last pairing.
Lawrence composes detailed wine descriptions and creative tasting menus for retail shops, wineries, restaurants, and charity events. In addition to being an international wine judge, Tony is a member and lecturer with the Society of Wine Educators, the German Wine Society, Zinfandel Advocates & Producers, and the American Wine Society (Germantown Chapter President). He has donated his vast talents to such charitable oraganizations as Medford Wildlife Refuge, Mt Airy USA, Inc.'s "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", College of SF Culinary Scholarship Fund, and the Ivy Legacy Foundation Scholarship Fund.
